Planning ahead for your move will make it less stressful and a more positive experience. Although this is not always possible given life events, Professional Movers offers the following tips and techniques to hopefully make it a little easier for you.

- Compile medical and dental records, get copies of renewable prescriptions, and arrange to have school and veterinarian records transferred to your new location. Gather copies of legal and financial documents.
- Create a move file to keep track of quotes, receipts, and other important information.
- Call Professional Movers to schedule your free estimate and move.
- Take inventory of your house. Decide which items you want to keep and which should be discarded. Consider donating the discarded items to charity or having a yard sale.
- Plan how you will move valuables and difficult-to-replace items. If you need help packing, contact Professional Movers to learn more about our packing service.
- Be sure your new home is protected by transferring fire, theft, and other personal property insurance.
- Transfer personal insurance records.
- Order boxes and moving supplies, and begin packing items you don’t use often. Label each box with its contents and the room it’s destined for. This is also a good time to review packing and loading tips.
- Check and clear tax assessments.
- Arrange to have major appliances serviced before you move them.
- Check with your mover to know what you can and can’t move. Use up items such as frozen foods, cleaning supplies, and aerosols in advance. Make travel arrangements for your pets and plan how to transport your plants so you’ll be prepared on moving day.

- If you are moving long distance, make hotel reservations for the trip.
- Notify the Post Office and get Change of Address forms. Notify magazines to which you subscribe. Note: You must fill out a change-of-address form for each person receiving mail at your address.
- Close or transfer all bank accounts and provide your new address information to all
credit accounts. - Return library books and other things you’ve borrowed. Collect things you’ve loaned, and items in layaway, cold storage, etc.
- Arrange to discontinue utilities and delivery services.
- Empty propane tanks as well as lawnmower fuel tanks.
- Reconfirm travel reservations.
- Arrange to connect all utilities in your new home.
- Draw a floor plan of your new home and indicate the placement of furnishings to make move-in day twice as easy and twice as fun.
- Set aside maps, medicines, important papers, games, snacks, flashlights, and other items you’ll take in your car.
- Drain water from all garden hoses.
- Start packing suitcases.
- Drain gasoline from gas power machines.
- Anything Professional Movers is packing should be left in place. It’s easier and safer; for example, to pack glassware right from the cabinet where it’s kept.
- Call or email your movers with questions, and print or save a copy of your bill of lading.
- Contact your bank or credit card provider to let them know you are moving and may
make unexpected charges. so your card won’t get declined for suspicious spending activity. - Pack a designated box with anything you might need once you arrive at your new house (paper products and utensils, light bulbs, coffee pot, small tool kit, trash bags, scissors, etc.). Load this box last so that it’s the first thing you unload upon arrival.
- Bring enough clothes and toiletries to cover the days you’ll travel as well as the first days in your new home. Don’t forget to refill prescriptions and bring them with you, too.
- Drain gas and oil from lawn equipment, gas grills, heaters, etc., and empty and defrost the refrigerator/freezer at least 24 hours before the move.
- Measure furniture and doorway to determine if they will fit through the door. Plan an alternate route if necessary.
- Finish packing all suitcases.
- Defrost, clean, and dry the refrigerator.
- Be sure to have your cell phone charged all day to answer questions, accompany the driver during inventory, sign the bill of lading, and confirm your new address and delivery date with your mover. Let them know your accommodations and landline telephone number if known.
- Make a final check of every room and storage area to make sure nothing is left behind. Lock windows and doors and be sure keys are transferred and lights are out.
- Clear a path and ensure nothing is blocking the walkway from the house to the moving container.
